A juried exhibition hosted by the Botanical Art Society (Singapore) and Singapore Botanic Gardens!

  • Showcasing contemporary botanical artwork of plants native to Southeast Asia.

Judges include well-known botanical artists and botanists from the regional art societies and Singapore Botanic Gardens.
 
The exhibition will be open to the public between 15 November 2022 to 15 February 2023 across multiple locations at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Important Dates

  1. Entry submission deadline: 15 April 2022 by 11:59 PM (GMT+8)
  2. Notofication of jury decisions:
    1. Round 1 on 15 June 2022 by 8 PM (GMT+8)
    2. Round 2 on 1 September 2022 by 8 PM (GMT+8)
  3. Deadline for delivery of artwork to Singapore: 1 October 2022
  4. Exhibition dates: 15 November 2022 - 15 February 2023

Entry Guidelines

All entries must be submitted digitally via Artcall (fsea.artcall.org). Artists must adhere to the online submission process described below and in the Terms and Conditions.

Submission Fee

USD 27 (USD25 submission fee + USD2 payment processing fee) per artwork entry

Digital Image Submission Requirements

File Name: “Artist Surname_First name_plant specimen name” e.g. “Chan_Jane_Syzygium_aqueum” (Judges will not see the file name)

  1. NO ARTIST SIGNATURE must be visible on the submitted digital artwork (for impartial and fair judging practices).
  2. NO WATERMARK OR OTHER DIGITAL MARKINGS must be visible in the artwork image.
  3. Images must be in the correct viewing orientation (correctly rotated).
  4. Image must be corrected to show white background.
  5. The image must represent the original artwork accurately. We highly recommend that the artwork be professionally scanned (preferred). If you photograph the artwork, the image should be colour corrected to match original artwork. The artwork should not have a visible background or frame and artwork photographed under glass should show no reflections.

Image File Specifications

  1. File Type: JPG only
  2. Resolution: 72 or 96 dpi
  3. Dimensions: Longer side (whether this is width or height) must be Minimum 1920 px and Maximum 3600 px. The higher (up to the Maximum) the better for the judges to be able to see your work, so smaller images may be rejected.
  4. File Size: Maximum 4Mb

Please note if your artwork is accepted into the exhibition, you will be required to submit a high resolution image file by 5 September, 2022. Further instructions will be supplied.

Subject Matter 

• Any flora native to Southeast Asia, including fungi, lichen and/or algae.
• A plant is considered native if it has occurred naturally in the Southeast Asian region, ecosystem, or habitat without human introduction.

Mediums Allowed

• Two-dimensional artwork in watercolour, pen & ink, coloured pencil, graphite, oil and acrylic medium on paper, vellum or canvas only.
• Artwork must be portrayed on a white background.
• Size of artwork may only be in A4 (21 x 29.7cm / 8.3 x 11.7 inches) or A3 (29.7 x 42cm / 11.7 x 16.5 inches).

Maximum Number of Entries

• Up to 3 artworks per artist, and each work will be judged individually.
• A separate entry fee is payable for each entry.

Copyright

All artists are responsible for ensuring that their artwork does not infringe any copyright and that it has not been previously exhibited in any exhibition in Southeast Asia.

Judging

There will be two rounds of judging to select the artwork for the exhibition.

Round One: Participating Societies will judge their own members' artworks and select the artworks for the second round of judging.
Round Two: Artworks will be judged by a panel of 5 judges (see below).

The artworks that are successfully selected in the Round 2 judging process will be accepted for exhibition into Flora of Southeast Asia Exhibition.

Delivery & Shipping

• Original artwork should be submitted to the membership Society for shipping to Singapore. For more information, please contact your Regional Botanical Art Society.
• Accepted artwork must be sent unmatted/unmounted in original A4 and/or A3 size, well packaged with adequate protection. Work that arrives damaged will not be displayed.
• Shipping costs will be borne by the submitting artist.

Physical Inspection

• The accepted artwork is subject to physical inspection once received in Singapore.
• The quality of the original  artwork and/or digital prints must match the original submission, or it will be disqualified.
• The Exhibition Organiser reserves the right to reject and withdraw an artwork from the Flora of Southeast Asia exhibition.

Commission / Artwork Sales 

• There is no requirement for artists to sell their artworks.
• Direct sales of artwork at the venue is not permissible. The Exhibition Organiser will help facilitate contact with any interested buyers.
• The Exhibition Organiser will charge 20% commission for any artwork (original and/or digital prints) sold within 1 year from the start date of the Flora of Southeast Asia Exhibition.

Retrieval of Unsold Artwork 

• All costs of shipping the artwork back to artist or to a buyer are the responsibility of the artist.
• The Exhibition Organiser will only coordinate the return packing.
• The Exhibition Organiser will not be responsible for the return of unclaimed artwork. Any artwork that is not collected by 20 April 2023 (unless arrangements have been made) will be considered donated to the Exhibition Organiser and will be disposed of as appropriate, without further notice to the artist.

Media & Promotional Consent 

All artists who have been successfully accepted into the Flora of Southeast Asia exhibition agree to have images of their artwork digitally stored, used and reproduced for event marketing and promotion on the Event Organiser’s website and social media channels. Further permission for such use will not be requested.
